– Fact: An Hoi Bridge is named after An Hoi Island, a small island on Thu Bon River and near Old Town

An Hoi Bridge on Google Maps

Name of An Hoi Bridge (Hoi An)

An Hoi Bridge is a 50-meters-long bridge across the Hoai River, a branch of Thu Bon River, the largest river in the region. It’s named after the An Hoi Island, a small island lying just opposite to the Hoi An Old Town (to the south). In the 1990s, the local government requested to build this bridge to provide a quick access from the center of Hoi An city to the island or vice versa. Before its construction, families living on the island used a ferry boat.

In addition, An Hoi Bridge is also known as ‘lantern bridge’ (because it’s decorated by many lanterns) or ‘bridge of lights’ (thousands of lights in its surrounding area every night). Sometimes, it refers to ‘Hoi An bridge’ as it’s situated in the heart of Hoi An or ‘Hoai River bridge’ as it’s the first bridge to cross the Hoai River.

By the way, the name of the river which An Hoi Bridge spans, means ‘missing (home)’. The reason is that Chinese populations moved to the town a long time ago and chose it to be the second hometown. However, they also always remember about their original hometown in China (such as Fujian, Hainan, Canton, Teochew,…). Hoai River is one of the most well known rivers all over Vietnam.

Best Time to Visit An Hoi Bridge (Hoi An)

The best time of the year to visit An Hoi Bridge in Hoi An is the evening. After sunset, the bridge itself as well as its surrounding streets and river, are illuminated by thousands of lights. One of the nicknames of Hoi An is ‘city of lanterns’. On the water, local residents and tourists release paper lanterns with shimmering candles.

In the morning, it’s much more peaceful in An Hoi Bridge than in the evening. When the sun just rises, this bridge is one of popular spots for photographers and photography lovers who come to hunt pictures without tourists. From 9 am to 11:30 am, it and the whole Hoi An Old Town world heritage site area become busier. Group tours begin walking into the town in the period and then sightsee historical places as streets have no motorbikes and cars.

From 11:30 am to 3 pm, the temperature is highest in the day. Due to strong heat, many visitors won’t stay outdoors and An Hoi Bridge becomes less crowded. Additionally, motorbikes can go on it.

Between 3 pm and sunset, tourists return to the town and of course, An Hoi Bridge receives lots of people. It’s quite small, so that there is no space sometimes to take photos.

The best night to visit An Hoi Bridge is the full moon night when the Hoi An Lantern Festival takes place. It’s a traditional festival celebrated every month in the town. During it, local residents will prepare offspring to commemorate the ancestors and the Lord Buddha, go to temples to pray, hang up red lanterns to have luck, release lotus lanterns on the river to make wishes, make special foods to share with family members,… On the streets, visitors will have the chance to observe traditional singing, dancing, calligraphy, gaming,… At the top of An Hoi Bridge, the townscape is brilliant and perfect for pictures.

On some days in the rainy season, An Hoi Bridge is affected by floods. Visitors should not visit if its entrances are blocked.

South Bank

To the south of An Hoi Bridge, that’s An Hoi Island. This area becomes more stunning and happening at night.

Along the waterside park, there are some official booths where visitors can buy tickets for lantern boat ride. The price is 170,000 to 220,000 VND per boat, depending on number of passengers and excluding lanterns to release. The duration will be 15-20 minutes. We recommend this activity for all visitors.

On Nguyen Hoang street, visitors will see the biggest night market in Hoi An (called Hoi An Night Market). Here, there are over 150 stalls selling street foods and souvenirs, making it a good place for those who like trying local dishes and going shopping. Around the entrance, lantern shops can not be missed if like taking beautiful pictures.

Along Nguyen Phuc Chu street, it’s easy to see local Vietnamese/fusion restaurants with live music, and bars with happy hours and a social atmosphere.

In the corner of Nguyen Phuc Chu street, have the chance to watch a world-class circus show named ‘Teh Dar’ at Hoi An Lune Center for Performing Arts. This show is not available on Monday and Friday. We recommend buying or reserving tickets in advance to keep the seats because it would be quickly sold out, especially weekends or holidays.
